Royals rally past Mets take 3-1 World Series lead

11:45 p.m. EDT October 31, 2015  NEW YORK – Breaking down Game 4 of the World Series from Citi Field between the Kansas City Royals and New York Mets:

Royals 5, Mets 3, Royals lead series 3-1.

The final: The Royals never led until a three-run rally in the eighth inning that was ignited by a pair of walks, fueled by a key error and capped by a pair of RBI singles by Mike Moustakas and Salvador Perez.

The Mets jumped out to the early lead on a pair of home runs by rookie Michael Conforto, but the Royals kept the game close and pounced when they got their opportunity.

Royals closer Wade Davis slammed the door on the Mets over the final two innings to record a six-out save.

State of the Series: The Mets will play their final home game of the season – and possibly their final game of the season – Sunday night in Game 5. New York will send Matt Harvey (13-8, 2.71 ERA; 2-0, 3.38 ERA in postseason) to the mound. Harvey started the World Series opener in Kansas City and delivered a quality start: six innings, three earned runs.

The Royals will also go back to their Game 1 starter, Edinson Volquez (13-9, 3.55 ERA; 1-2, 4.37 ERA in playoffs). In that game, Volquez pitched on the same day his father died in the Domincan Republic. He also allowed three runs in six innings.

Neither starter factored in the decision in a game the Royals eventually won in a World Series-record tying 14 innings.

The have now scored 44 runs in the 7th inning or later this postseason. The previous record was 36, held by the 2002 Angels.
