Biden sent message to Greek President Sakellaropoulou

US President Joe Biden on Monday sent President Katerina Sakellaropoulou a letter on the occasion of Greece celebrating the bicentennial .

In his letter, Biden underlined the fact that Greece is a key NATO ally and close friend of the United States, a country that provides stability and actively contributes to peace and prosperity in the Eastern Mediterranean, the Black Sea and the Western Balkans.

He also noted that during his political career he had had the privilege of working closely with several Greek prime ministers and has also had long conversations with Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew.

Biden noted that he looks forward to continue the tradition of further strengthening cooperation between the two countries, and of reaffirming the joint commitment to the Transatlantic Alliance and to all the common values that unite Greece and the US.

Biden to speak with EU leaders as a way to shore up ties

In an effort to establish ties with European Union leaders, the newly-elected President will meet with all the 27 EU leaders later on Thursday in a virtual conference.

Many Europeans were dismayed when former President Donald Trump pulled out of the Paris Climate Accords and the Iran nuclear deal.

European Council President Charles Michel tweeted on Wednesday “Looking forward to welcome @POTUS at this week’s European Council meeting.”

“I have invited the President of the US to join our meeting for him to share his views on our future cooperation. Time to rebuild our transatlantic alliance.”

Michel will chair tomorrow’s virtual meeting.

It has been more than a decade since an American President spoke at an EU summit; according to an EU spokesman, the last such instance was in 2009. Of course, EU representatives and those from the United States have held regular summits at NATO headquarters during that time.

The topics of Thursday and Friday’s virtual meetings will cover the areas of vaccines, developments in Russia and Turkey and industrial policy. US President Biden is expected to join the assembly at 9:45 p.m. Greek time on Thursday, according to an EU spokesman.

A statement issued by the White House said Biden “will engage with European Union leaders about his desire to revitalize US-EU relations, work together to combat the pandemic and address climate change, and deepen the world’s largest trade and investment relationship.”

The US leader will also discuss China and Russia with the leaders of the EU states, who have welcomed the new administration as an opportunity to work further in the areas of human rights and global warming.

However, in what comes as a surprise to some experts, Biden is continuing the US’ strong stance regarding China, and is against Germany’s efforts to complete a gas pipeline with Russia.

Moreover, the US continues to insist that Europeans, as partners in NATO, spend their equal share in defense, and this continues to be a sore point, according to diplomats.
